South African Voices is a community singing group in Melbourne
The group is based in Doncaster East in Manningham Shire and has had support form ex- South Africans and South African friends locally, and further a field since 2003. Presentations have been done at community events, various churches, including at the inaugural presentation by the Archbishop of Cape Town for the 2003 AngliCORD appeal at St John’s Church in Camberwell and the Manningham “Songburst” singing festival in 2007.
The primary aim of South African Voices is to enable ex-South Africans to connect with their roots and to celebrate and express their cultural heritage through song. It also enables us to share and promote this rich and diverse heritage in the community, by participating in a range of cultural activities in Melbourne. Our repertoire consists of a wide range of songs in various South African languages.
We welcome new singers and musicians. We are not professional singers, but sing for enjoyment, although professional singers are also of course welcome. Presentations are always very professional and the professional training offered by our conductors, to date, in a fun environment, has allowed for the development of voice projection, controlled breathing and more. Members of all ages are represented, from high school students through to more senior members of the community. Some members are partners of Afrikaans speaking members and use the opportunity to develop their Afrikaans language skills by singing in Afrikaans with the group. Accompaniment is on piano, but traditional songs may be supported with guitar, drums, concertina or other traditional instruments.
Some songs from our repertoire;
SA National Anthem Dis Heerlike Lente Al die Veld is Vrolik Suiker Bossie Jan Pierewiet and other Afrikaans folk songs Kookaburra Jabulani Afrika (Zulu) Calendar song Monateng kapele (Sotho)
